A tradeline is a credit account that appears on one’s credit report. Each credit account you have is a separate tradeline. Primary tradelines are those that belong to you; they’re accounts where you are the primary account holder.

Here’s a breakdown of primary tradelines as they relate to credit cards:

1. Primary Tradeline: When you open a credit card under your name, you are the primary account holder, and that credit card appears as a primary tradeline on your credit report. This means you are responsible for making payments, and the account’s activity (like credit utilization, payment history, and age of account) affects your credit score.
2. Authorized User Tradeline: If someone adds you as an authorized user on their credit card, that account appears on your credit report as an “authorized user tradeline.” While being an authorized user can help you benefit from the primary holder’s good credit habits, it’s not as influential as having your own primary tradeline.
3. Importance of Primary Tradelines: Lenders and creditors prefer to see primary tradelines because they reflect your personal credit management habits. If you’re seeking a significant loan, such as a mortgage, the lender will typically want to see multiple primary tradelines that have been in good standing for a certain period, say two years or more.
